Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Earn Nostalgic Triumph Over Malmö
“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed through the ground as Nottingham Forest fans celebrated a further win against their Swedish opponents. Much has transpired since Francis's winning header secured the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but Forest continue to hold dear those glorious moments. Similarly, significant changes have taken place in the five weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team appearing reinvigorated and earning a convincing victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of progressing in the European competition.
Gaining Momentum with Another Straight Victory
For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing sixth in their home competition – marked a third straight triumph across all competitions and added to the momentum gained from last weekend’s success at Liverpool. While this fixture was a reminder of Forest’s European Cup success in spirit, the game itself was devoid of any significant tension or jitters.
This was an occasion dripping in sentiment, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third meeting between the teams since the European Cup final over four decades past.
The home side fully embraced the history, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by providing them, along with their visiting counterparts, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Swedish club’s team from that time were also present. Both teams shared a meal together prior to the match. Forest legends and their teammates received a tumultuous welcome when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before the start, and a typically superb display was shown in the Trent End.
Recalling the Past
“May 30, 1979, John Robertson delivered the ball from the left flank,” read one part of a giant banner, in capital letters. While no one needed reminding of what ensued, the rest was unfurled as the squads emerged from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. Another stunning tifo showed Clough watching events beside his assistant Peter Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.
Control from the Start
So, the hosts had drunk in those beautiful recollections, but what about the performance on the evening? It was impressive, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward whistled an effort wide inside two minutes and established a two-goal advantage by the break. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.
It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defense captained by their own academy product captain, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds United and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a defender and into the pathway of Yates, who swept home with his right foot from just inside the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.
Another Strike Seals Dominance
Yates was involved in Forest’s second goal on the verge of half-time, as well, his free header parried by the goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to tap in the loose ball from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a seldom start and just his second outing since the autumn, was the spark, lofting a perfect ball towards his teammate at the far post.
A minute earlier, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was turned aside off the back Colin Rösler, son of former Manchester City forward Uwe Rösler, and an free Milenkovic also previously had a strong header instinctively repelled by the keeper, who returned in place of the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
Malmö’s Struggles
This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on 9 November, and they struggled to equal Forest’s intensity. Forest extended the lead to three when the defender scored after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. Yates had a shot blocked, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.
Forest then pushed for more, with the winger chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from 30 yards. It was that kind of nights. The manager, aware of the upcoming league game here against Brighton, implemented seven changes from the team that stunned Liverpool at their ground recently, when they additionally netted three goals, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus during the final period.
Hiccup-Free Evening for Forest
It proved a hiccup-free night for Forest. The coach could take off Murillo with the match already sewn up and later introduced 19-year-old full-back Sinclair for his senior bow. He talked about the club legends supplying “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop demonstrated they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, as well.
