The Actress Expresses Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ That’s Ripping the Country Apart

Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she no longer feels appropriate to comment publicly regarding the Trump administration, concerned it could exacerbate polarizing arguments and deepen rifts within the United States.

‘I Question the Usefulness’, Explains Jennifer Lawrence

In a recent interview, she reflected, “When Trump was first in office, I believed I was moving hastily without clear direction. But as we’ve learned, election after election, Hollywood stars do not make a difference in any way on electoral choices.”

The actor went on, “Why continue? I’m just sharing my opinion on an issue that’s going to heighten conflict that’s ripping the nation apart.”

Shifting Views

Lawrence has spoken candidly about voting for both conservative and liberal candidates in past elections. Raised by Republican parents in her home state, she voted for the Republican nominee in 2008 prior to switching to the left-leaning politics and stating she realized during the Obama era that supporting the GOP was voting against her individual liberties as a woman.

Past Statements

Earlier in her career, she stated that a Trump victory would be “a disaster” and publicly supported the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. In the latest campaign, she voiced her backing to Vice President Harris, “since I feel she’s an amazing candidate and I know that she will make every effort to protect reproductive rights.”

Celebrity Views

Jennifer Lawrence was joined by many in the entertainment industry in her disapproval of Trump as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the electoral decisions was underscored by the outcome.

“Another four years feels different,” said Lawrence about his leadership. “Because he made his plans clear. We were aware of his actions for four years. He was very clear. And voters made that decision.”

Latest Film

Lawrence is highlighting Die, My Love, director Lynne Ramsay’s movie in which she plays a new mother who deals with her psychological well-being in a remote area. Speaking at a media event for the project in Venice, Lawrence commented on Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s horrifying. What’s occurring is no less than a genocide and it’s awful.”

Wider Issues

Lawrence added by saying that she was saddened by “the hostility in the conversations of the political landscape at present and how that is going to be commonplace to the kids now. It’s going to be normal to them that leaders are untruthful.”

She attempted to refocus outrage about the situation to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Stay focused on the people in charge,” she remarked, in what many took to be a nod to the declaration supported by thousands of arts community members to avoid specific industry bodies.

Personal Connections

Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim aged 22 for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, is receiving praise for her portrayal in Die, My Love. Even though Lynne Ramsay has disputed the story being seen as one of post-birth struggles and psychological distress, Lawrence revealed that she identified with elements of her role’s experience after the delivery of her new baby, not long after filming concluded.

“There was concern regarding my baby,” she said, “envisioning every worst-case scenario, and then second-guessing everything that I was attempting. I was already in therapy, but I got on a treatment called the prescription and I continued it for 14 days and it was effective.”

Film Challenges

The actor also mentioned of the empowering aspect of filming without clothes in the project while she was in pregnancy and unable to exercise.

“There’s a freedom,” she commented, about having to set aside self-consciousness. “Truly, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What technically are the differences between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
